My Project
This year I have a very active group of students with a wide variety of sensory needs and interests. In order to improve their ability to engage in learning and follow classroom expectations, we are hoping to provide them increased opportunities for sensory play and input in the classroom.
Sensory play is essential for child development - not only will these items will help my students develop their problem solving skills, fine and gross motor skills, and language use and acquisition, but they will also help create a fun and exciting learning environment.
We will use the tunnel and shopping cart to incorporate movement breaks for students who benefit from heavy work activities and proprioceptive input, which can be calming and regulating. The ball pit will provide students with a fun, stimulating movement break. The tabletop activity center, TheraPutty, ribbon pull cube, and gel mazes will benefit students with fine motor needs. We also have students who enjoy the comfort of small, confined spaces and believe the PeaPod will provide them with the calm, deep pressure they are seeking. The wiggle seat sensory chair cushions will allow students to move and receive sensory input while still sitting in their chair and staying on task.
Some organizational items are also needed to develop and store independent tasks more effectively. We will use the bins to store manipulatives and tasks. The 3-drawer organizers will enable us to set up structured task routines for students who struggle to choose safe activities and engage in play independently. The hook-and-loop coins are an essential supply for making developmentally appropriate tasks.
