Saint Patrick's Day Recipes (1)

(Post modified with new photos on 2/28/23.)

Both sides of our families have delved into genealogical records enough to know where our families came from before traveling to America. We know that our families have a mixture of German and Irish decent that is probably 60/40. My mother’s maiden name is McKelvy, but there’s a lot of German blood mixed in on all sides. There’s probably some English thrown in there, too.

One thing I know for certain is we like sausage, cabbage, and potatoes. In my search for traditional Irish recipes, I found that there is a mish-mash crossing of recipes (English/Irish) (Irish/German) (Irish/American). Maybe you consider one recipe English, but it’s also found in Ireland. And many American dishes are not typical Irish fare, but rather Irish-American.

So with that in mind, I hope you will enjoy the mix of recipes I’ve put together below. Here’s to the Irish!

While not typical Irish recipes, many of these are what we in America think of for an Irish Saint Patrick’s Day Dinner. Along with Guinness beer. Irish Whisky. Or Irish Cream.

Most recipes have black currants and/or caraway seeds. It is a heavy, quick bread that is inexpensive to make and hearty-enough to fill one’s stomach at the beginning (or the end) of the day.
