Mortal Kombat 2: Lewis Tan Teases Brutal Fatalities and Character Deaths (2025)

Hold on tight, Mortal Kombat fans, because nobody is safe in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2! According to Lewis Tan, who returns as Cole Young, the sequel is pulling absolutely no punches when it comes to character deaths. Get ready for some serious heartbreak – and maybe a little bit of cheering, too.

In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Tan revealed that the script has been a whirlwind of changing fates. "They should be worried for everyone, to be honest," Tan stated, sending chills down the spines of fans everywhere. "In different versions of the script, different people died. I was like, ‘No way.’ Then, they changed it and switched it. By the end of it, nobody is safe. Anybody could die… and there are a lot of fatalities in the second movie. If your favorite character dies, it’s not the end. Death is only the beginning. Don’t be too upset, but there are a lot of fatalities. Some people are going to be happy and some are going to be really p-ssed off.”

But here's where it gets controversial... Tan's cryptic statement, "Death is only the beginning," has sparked some wild speculation. Could Mortal Kombat 2 be introducing a time-bending element, similar to some of the games? Imagine the possibilities – a grizzled, battle-hardened Johnny Cage (played by Karl Urban) interacting with his younger, cockier self! It's a tantalizing thought, and one that would open up a whole new realm of storytelling possibilities. Of course, this is just speculation, and we'll have to wait until the film hits theaters on May 15, 2026, to know for sure. And this is the part most people miss... if they DO introduce time travel, could previously deceased characters return to the fold?

The plot thickens! Mortal Kombat 2, once again directed by Simon McQuoid, promises to be an all-out war for the fate of Earthrealm. Our favorite champions, now including the iconic Johnny Cage, will face their greatest challenge yet: the tyrannical Shao Kahn and his forces of darkness. The stakes are higher than ever, with the very existence of Earthrealm hanging in the balance. The film boasts a stellar cast, including Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion. It's a veritable who's who of Mortal Kombat talent!

Now, here's where we want to hear from you. What are some of your all-time favorite Mortal Kombat fatalities that you're dying to see recreated on the big screen? Which character death would absolutely break your heart? And, perhaps most importantly, do you think Mortal Kombat 2 has the potential to surpass the original? Sound off in the comments below! Let's get the discussion going. Is it possible that killing off major characters is just a cheap way to shock audiences, or is it a necessary step to raise the stakes and stay true to the brutal nature of the Mortal Kombat universe? We want to know what you think!
