Black History Month 2025: A Celebration of Resilience and Pride
In October 2025, Microsoft UK employees embarked on a month-long journey to honor and uplift Black history and culture. The theme, 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride,' guided a series of captivating events, each designed to educate, inspire, and unite.
The month's itinerary was diverse and impactful. From a thought-provoking panel discussion on neurodiversity to a vibrant marketplace fair showcasing Black-owned businesses, the events offered a unique blend of learning and celebration. A highlight was the talk on the 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott, delivered by the esteemed BBC broadcaster Primrose Granville, providing a powerful reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the past.
Embrace, Microsoft's dedicated employee community, played a pivotal role in organizing these events. With a mission to celebrate and advance ethnic diversity, Embrace hosted a vibrant closing celebration, bringing employees together both in person and virtually. Jeramie Sutton, Embrace's Co-chair, emphasized the importance of creating inclusive spaces: 'We want to foster environments where we can unite, connect, and stand tall with confidence and pride.'
The celebration featured moments of reflection and inspiration, shedding light on the achievements and stories that shaped the month's activities. Dedun Oyenuga and Anjola Adebowale, the BHM organizers, shared their vision: 'Our goal is to empower and enable Black underrepresented talent, driving innovation and excellence in the digital realm.'
And this is where it gets truly inspiring. Two of the UK's most influential Black leaders, Pam Maynard and Jacky Wright, took center stage. Described as 'powerhouses' by moderator Zephaniah Chukwudum, these women shared their journeys as Black female leaders in male-dominated industries.
Pam Maynard, Chief AI Transformation Officer for Microsoft Customers & Partners, reflected on her unique perspective: 'I realized that my difference is my power. Being the only person who looked like me in the room gave me a unique strength.'
Jacky Wright, former Microsoft Chief Digital Officer and now a senior partner at McKinsey, emphasized the power of mental fortitude and community: 'Recognize your individuality and the power you bring. I am proud of who I am, my history, and my background.'
Both leaders offered valuable insights into navigating challenging situations. Jacky Wright shared her coping mechanism: 'I enter rooms with my elevator pitch, introducing myself and my purpose within the first two minutes.'
Pam Maynard encouraged the audience to believe in themselves: 'You are the expert in your field. Embrace that expertise as a strength.'
As the celebrations came to a close, the message was loud and clear: standing firm in power and pride is an everyday commitment. BHM 2025 at Microsoft UK showcased the transformative power of community, representation, and collective action. It's a reminder that diversity is a strength, and together, we can create a more inclusive and empowering future.
